Ash Murray blasted an incredible 160 goals in 18 games, including five in Bullioh's grand final win over Cudgewa, in the Upper Murray Football League.
"I'm pretty good mates with (fellow Howlong recruit and former Bullioh team-mate) Hamish Clark, and once this year had been cancelled, I messaged him to see what he was doing next year and he wasn't sure," Murray said.
"He messaged me back one day and asked if I was keen to come out to Howlong, I said, 'if you're going, I'll come out there', I'm easygoing and that got the ball rolling."
Apart from the year at Bullioh, Murray has spent his senior career in the Hume League after stints with Jindera and Murray Magpies.
The strong forward has also kicked a century of goals in a season with the Magpies.
"The level of the competition (in the Upper Murray) was a bit easier and I'm still young enough to play some pretty good footy," the soon-to-be 29-year-old said.
"I enjoyed it (Bullioh), but the higher level of competition has got me interested."
Murray is a versatile forward, capable of leading and marking, or using his strength to battle defenders one on one.
"He's a great mark and a great kick for goal," Howlong president Jason Kohn said.
Kohn admits one of the best recruiting tools in any sport - mateship - has played a critical role in the Spiders improving their list after missing finals last year.
"It helps massively, we've been lucky this year to have a couple like that, Jesse Johnston, he's good mates with Blake Williams," he said.
Meanwhile, the Spiders have also signed Dylan Cook from Ovens and Murray club Corowa-Rutherglen.

Cook played only eight games last year, with seven in the seniors.
