A timeframe for lifting the "ring of steel" separating Melbourne and regional Victoria could be announced at the weekend.

Premier Daniel Andrews said the "regional/metro border" was among the issues to be discussed on Sunday.
"We'll have those different restrictions in place only for so long as they service a public health benefit and help us to keep the numbers low so that we can keep opening up," he said of the checkpoints.
"All of those matters will be things I'll talk about on Sunday."
Mr Andrews said he'd have more to say on restrictions on hospitality and retail.
"It's not just an announcement for one day; we hope to be able to give people a clear sense of what the next few weeks look like," he said.
"That's what people want and that's what we believe we're in a position to do."
Mr Andrews has said this week he hopes the internal border will be removed sometime in November.
Also, a commitment to reopen state borders by Christmas has been reaffirmed at today's National Cabinet meeting.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison said all states bar WA had agreed to the timeframe.

"But around the rest of the country, they have their timetables and we look forward to that opening and the commitment [is that] by Christmas of this year, certainly seven out of the eight states and territories will be open," he said.
Victoria's shutdown was discussed in National Cabinet.
"The focus of the discussion was moving more towards the public health capability to ensure you wouldn't need those sorts of closures in the future," Mr Morrison said.
"We're keen to see that opening up [of Victoria].
