This is not only because of the physical work they carry out but also, just as crucially, the spirit of sharing and support they foster.
Becoming a volunteer, in whatever field, is not just something for retirees looking to fill in time previously filled by paid work.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Yes, they are clearly a considered force in ensuring a whole range of organisations committed to the welfare of the community can operate as efficiently as possible.
But as we often see - and it's something regularly told in The Border Mail - volunteers come from all ages and all sorts of backgrounds.
That's even in a world now dominated by the scourge of COVID-19 and, in our community and beyond, the impact of various restrictions and lock-downs.
It is fascinating to note that a stand-out flow-on effect of the pandemic for Border volunteering has been a greater understanding of just what being a volunteer means.
And that's happened in a mighty hurry for the Albury-Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau.
Chief executive Jemma Toohey has told of how the nature of volunteering is now much clearer.
Volunteering has taken a hit during the pandemic in terms of actual numbers on the ground, as is to be expected given the nature of being in the community helping others, but it hasn't stopped progress being made.
For the bureau that has involved providing what Ms Toohey says is a "regional perspective" in a submission to what is the Victorian government's first volunteering strategy.
That centre's on the bureau's own volunteering "toolkit" for volunteering, a project that since the pandemic began has been expanded - thanks to state funding - to more sites.
This, plus the bureau's own continued commitment to making connections with similar organisations nationwide, means it is well-placed to continue to adapt to these changed times.
The future of volunteering certainly looks bright.
