William Gardner was on Thursday committed to stand trial for the charges of intentionally causing serious injury to Justine Havik and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
He pleaded not guilty.
Gardner and his partner were drinking in the car port with Ms Havik and her then-boyfriend Raymond Bodsworth in November 2019, when the violence started.
A committal hearing in Wangaratta Magistrates Court heard different versions of how it started from Ms Havik and Mr Bodsworth.
Ms Havik said Mr Bodsworth accidentally caused her to fall onto her back and Gardner's partner retaliated, while Mr Bodsworth said Ms Havik shoved him onto the couch.
But they agreed on what Gardner allegedly did next.
MORE NEWS FROM COURT:
"The next thing I know I got thrown into a fence - just like that, it was so quick," Ms Havik said.
"If I had seen him coming, I'm not joking, I would have ran.
"He's a big boy."
Gardner allegedly dragged the woman outside by her hair, punched her with both fists, kicked her to the face while on the ground, then turned the hose water on her.
"It hurts when you get kicked in the head with boots on," Ms Havik said.
She required surgery for her injuries, telling the court she "was in hospital having half my face replaced".
Asked why tensions were high, Mr Bodsworth said "Will didn't like the way Justine was being loud". He called police after the alleged assault, saying he tried to stop Gardner, but "had no chance".
Gardner has been in custody since his arrest and will appear at trial in the County Court at a later date.
