Police on Thursday concluded a two-day search for Ruth Ridley, examining Neils Reserve east of Walwa and a pine plantation near Shelley where her husband Gary's body was found last November.
Detective Andrew Leonard said it was always going to be a challenge.
Mr Ridley is believed to have driven to Tumbarumba after killing his wife at the camping area, and was found 35 kilometres south of Walwa, leaving a massive search area.
"It's disappointing but we knew we had to give it our best shot," he said.
"We searched for some time and weren't successful."
