Operation Safeguard began this week and will run until March in a bid to reduce bush and grass fires during the warmer months.
Wangaratta Inspector Ash Mason said those in the North East were well aware of the dangers posed by such incidents following last summer's fires in the Upper Murray and Ovens regions.
"At the very worst we know the consequences of bushfires and arson related matters can result in death and loss of infrastructure, and have an impact on our agricultural and horticultural industries," he said.
"It's quite a significant impact.
"What's been identified is that last bushfire season there were 26 charges statewide for reckless behaviour, fires that are caused through carelessness, particularly on high fire risk days."
Acting Inspector Mason said illegal burn-offs and unattended camp fires were the most common cause of out-of-control blazes.

The use of farm machinery, including harvesters, and the use of grinders and welders on hot days is also a concern.
North East officers will patrol high-risk areas and closely watch known offenders.
Acting Inspector Mason said during the last bushfire period, police recorded 185 incidents of people causing damage by fire and 20 cases of causing a bushfire statewide.
"We urge any community members to contract Triple-0 if they observe any suspect behaviour, or to call police or Crime Stoppers if they have information about fires," he said.
