During last summer's fires, up to 600 people took shelter at Corryong College, but because the town is dependent on a single line of electricity from Wodonga, it was cut off from power.

Now the college has a new 40kW solar energy system with a grant from Commonwealth Bank, which will reduce power bills by more than two thirds.
A battery and generator can be added later to ensure security of energy supply to the school.

"This solar installation is a real shot in the arm for our community," Corryong College principal Fran Heath said.
"We see this installation as a positive starting point for our own school's energy transition and that of the Upper Murray Community.
"We also anticipate using the learning to help our students understand the potential to reduce costs of energy, understand efficiencies and help reduce carbon emissions."
