Both directions of the highway are closed at Pine Lodge between Aratula South Road and Hamilton Street.
Diversions have been put in place for all vehicles, including B-double trucks.
If travelling from Deniliquin, Conargo Road via Jerilderie and the Newell Highway to Finley remain open for a return to the Riverina Highway.

Motorists travelling from Finley may divert via the Newell Highway to Jerilderie and use Conargo Road back to Deniliquin.
Detours are expected to extend the journey by about 45 minutes, according to livetraffic.com.
As at 2pm, the bushfire had burnt up to 800 hectares and continues out-of-control.
It is understood the fire began near Myrtle Park just after 1pm.
A large air tanker has been dispatched to assist ground crews in slowing its spread.
Anyone in Blighty, Finley or surrounds is being told to maintain extreme caution, follow the advice of firefighters and prepare to enable their bushfire survival plan if needed.
Meanwhile, a separate grass fire has been subdued after burning through 600 hectares near Old Corowa Road, Jerilderie.
