Firefighters, council staff, contractors and the SES were called to the intersection of North and Lavis streets about 11.30am on Thursday.
The large main burst - likely due to its age and the weather - leaving some homes in the area without water.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The area remains blocked to traffic and the issue is expected to take a long time to fix.
There are concerns about water seeping into homes.
Another water pipe has also been damaged on Union Road but isn't causing major problems.
An Albury Council spokesman said there wouldn't be widespread supply problems but some buildings may have discoloured water.
