Cody Meloury allegedly attacked the woman on June 24, 2018, after returning home following a drinking session.
The Wangaratta Magistrates Court on Thursday heard he had pinned the woman against a bed so she couldn't break free, causing her "intense" pain.
She tried to wriggle free, yelling to be let go.
It's alleged Meloury kneed her in the stomach and came out with a part of a firearm and bullets before running into the backyard.
His partner fled to her mother's home, the court heard, and she couldn't feel her baby moving later that day.
There were concerns about bleeding.
IN OTHER NEWS:
The court heard she told people Meloury had rolled over and accidentally kneed her but then told others in the following months what allegedly happened.
Lawyer Allison Vaughan said it "hasn't been a happy road" between the pair over the past two years, and they have separated.
She said Meloury had been dealing with the sudden death of his brother at the time and struggled with substance abuse.
While he hasn't stopped drinking, the court heard he was doing a better job of dealing with his emotions.
It's alleged he also breached an order on January 18 this year by putting a post on Facebook.
The court heard Meloury, who hasn't entered a plea, has no priors.
While he is suitable to undertake a community corrections order, magistrate Lance Martin raised concerns about his attitude to the order.
His lawyer will talk to him about the case before it returns on Friday.
