Emily Phegan, Larissa Schilg and Evie Torrens saddled up for their last day at Walla Public School by riding 12 kilometres to school as their ancestors might once have done.

Setting off from the Phegan property at 7am, the trio laughed and reminisced about their time together at the close-knit school during the one-hour ride.

Riding to school on the last day has become somewhat of a tradition in the Phegan household.

It started five years ago with Caroline and Danny's eldest daughter Jess.

Following in her footsteps has been Matilda, then it was Bill's turn two years later, explains Danny who rides along "to keep an eye on them" (although it's hard to work out exactly who is having more fun along the way).

However in typical Bill style, he'd actually taken the journey some years before it was his turn.

"Bill wouldn't be denied and as a 9-year-old he stowed away on the back of a horse and rode in the year Jess graduated - much to his sister's consternation," Danny laughed.

But this year it was Emily's turn, and she was joined by her "besties" Larissa Schilg and Evie Torrens, as well as her grandfather Warwick.

Danny says the school was initially nervous about the jaunt; in the first year they only rode to the boundary.

Now it's a tradition embraced by students and teachers alike and "a day the riders will never forget".

"It's particularly poignant as some friends part ways to go to different secondary colleges next year," Danny added.
