One of the occupants managed to douse the fire in the hallway, however by the time the main fire was out it had reached inside the wall cavity and had begun to spread.
Calls were made to 000 at around 3.40am on Boxing Day and Turvey Park Fire and Rescue NSW crews rushed to the scene.
FRNSW superintendent Stewart Alexander said it was a long and difficult job, but firefighters had done an excellent job using thermal imaging cameras to track and eliminate the fire.
"As you can imagine once it's inside the walls it's a little bit difficult to get at so they took some time to make sure it was completely out," Mr Alexander said.
"It had spread into the wall cavity and their quick work identifying it made sure that it didn't spread any further and cause more serious damage."
IN OTHER NEWS:
All six occupants were evacuated safely from the building, and nobody was seriously harmed by the blaze.
The building was a short-term accommodation on Fitzmaurice Street, and neither of the neighbouring buildings were damaged by the fire.
Firefighters do not yet know what caused fire, however the matter is being investigated by Wagga Police.
