The service opened a second clinic at Wodonga racecourse on Saturday and Sunday to cope with the demand, having already changed plans and resumed its Vermont Street clinic on New Year's Day.

Another testing site was also set up at Albury's Lauren Jackson Sports Centre, but has not been needed to date.

Hospital commander of the incident management team Lucie Shanahan praised the community's "phenomenal response", and the clinic staff who cut short their leave, as Victorians returning from NSW sought to be tested.

Using the racecourse facility alleviated the long queues and traffic build-up in Wodonga.

"The wait time was probably out to four or five hours at its peak, but we managed to work it down pretty rapidly and from what I understand everyone who presented for testing on January 2 was able to get a test on the day, so that was a really great outcome," she said.

Dr Shanahan said the negative tests reflected most people had followed the travel advice and only visited regional NSW, where there was a lower likelihood of coronavirus.

"We're appreciative, we're thankful, but we're not surprised by that result," she said.

COVID-19 test results could be received in about 24 hours or possibly 30 hours if completed later in the day.

"The pathology specimens need to head to Melbourne to be processed so as long as they've departed the Border by about 4pm in the afternoon we can get those turned around in about 24 hours," the hospital commander said.

A Murrumbidgee Local Health District spokeswoman said its Lavington testing clinic conducted 172 tests on Sunday alone, out of 216 in total since Thursday.

"In response to an increase in calls to the hotline, as well as a large number of walk-ups, the clinic extended its hours to meet the demand from locals and travellers seeking a test," she said.

"Waiting times for the Lavington clinic can be minimised by calling the Murrumbidgee COVID-19 hotline on 1800 831 099 to register before presenting for a test."

Dr Shanahan said the border closure had not affected Albury Wodonga Health services, with work done to ensure sufficient staffing.

"Thankfully, the health directions that have come out of DHHS are particularly favourable and enable us to manage our locum workforce really easily and pretty flexibly," she said.

"We undertake individual assessments on a case by case basis to make sure that everyone is safe to be within our health facility but so far we're able to maintain our medical services and all our services with very little impact."
