Wangaratta Gold defeated CAW Country in its under 15 clash at North East Junior Country Week on Monday. The visitors elected to bat at Wodonga's Les Cheesley Oval and posted a highly competitive total of 6-174 from its 40 overs. No.4 Lucas Hales was superb with 54 from only 61 deliveries, including two boundaries. He arrived at the crease at 2-44 and compiled just over half the runs during his stay, departing at 5-145. He combined in a 73-run stand for the fifth wicket with Will McCarthy, who hit a brisk 37 from 41, also including two boundaries. Openers James Thewlis and Harry Jones built a platform for the innings with a 39-run partnership. The pair showed tremendous patience, with Thewlis striking 25 from 47, while Jones hit Gold's other three fours in scoring 15. Jordan Rhodes was the sole multiple wicket-taker with 3-24 from eight overs. CAW Country replied with 147 as Jones snared 6-18. Eddy Schultheis, who represented Riverina last week at Bradman Cup (under 16 level), produced a terrific innings at first drop, hitting 46 from 52, including five boundaries. Phoenix Gothard top-scored with 67 runs. Gold had a difficult start to the competition on Sunday, falling to CAW by five wickets after being skittled for 68. IN OTHER NEWS CAW Country, meantime, had a solid three-wicket win over Wagga. Rounds three and four will now be played on Sunday and Monday.
