Registrations, which were due to open on Monday, have been delayed a week due to ongoing negotiations between organisers and state governments.

Border closures have continued to cause headaches for Albury-Wodonga's biggest joint community event, with organisers having to nagivate checkpoints and border passes into their COVID-safe plan.

The original plan, which was officially launched on December 11, the 7.5 kilometre, 10 kilometre and 15 kilometre fun runs from Albury to Wodonga were to be held on February 21 with a "walk and talk" event to be virtual across the month.

But in a social media post this week, organisers have been forced to press pause on those plans for now.

"We are continuing to work with local and state authorities to explore options and seek approvals to stage a physical fun run on Sunday, February 21, in addition to the Johnsons MME virtual walk and talk throughout February," the statement said.

"Unfortunately, with the current COVID-19 state of play and the border closures, the likelihood of securing approval to run a physical fun run is looking increasingly remote.

"We plan to make a final decision late this week, and then invest our energies and efforts into ensuring the 2021 City2City, whichever format it takes, is another highly engaging community event that thanks our local health service and celebrates the strength of our two cities, one community."

Under the revised COVID-safe plan, there was to be a trickle start with each runner in a chute and setting off in bunches of three to four with 10-second gaps.

The 10km and 15km events were to be limited to 1000 entrants each and the 7.5 kilometre run to 500 contestants.

In the statement, organisers said they hope to have an answer for eager participants wanting to register by the end of this week.
