The NSW Premier has called for an "open and compassionate" approach to closed borders as the start of the 2021 school year approaches.

Gladys Berejiklian acknowledged that there are communities across that live on the state border who are "more impacted than others".
"Victoria was up around 120, 180 cases I think before we closed the border there, we are nowhere near that now anywhere in Australia," she said in her morning press conference on Wednesday.
"I think we need to have a very open and compassionate approach to to those border issues.
"It has been tough, especially on the eastern seaboard, where so many border communities exist, there is so much interaction between our communities.

"I'd like to see better border arrangements across Australia of course, but there are particular spots where people are more impacted than others.
"We believe in open borders unless it is absolutely necessary to take action otherwise.
"We don't want to see people affected and we are lucky now that it is still school holidays.
"Could you imagine the chaos of border closures and restrictions when school's on and kids, teachers and parents have to go across borders for education purposes and also for work purposes.
"All of that needs to be taken into consideration."
NSW recorded just one case of community transmission to 8pm on Tuesday.
