Scott Chilvers was on Thursday ordered to perform 150 hours of community work over 18 months following a drunken incident in Wodonga.
He had made the threats to family members and told his stepson's partner, "I'm going to light you on fire, I don't give a f--- about you, you're nothing to me".
He had been in custody since his arrest on December 15, the night of the incident, with Wodonga magistrate David Faram noting the seriousness of his behaviour during Thursday's sentencing.
"You engaged in some significantly threatening and terrifying behaviour," he said.
"It's apparent from the summary of the offending .. you made some significant threats to destroy property by blowing up a gas cylinder and otherwise pouring fuel, threatening to pour fuel, on property and placing people in great fear for their lives.

"This is significant offending Mr Chilvers.
"I accept that at the time this offending occurred you were significantly affected by alcohol."
He said it appeared Chilvers also had an anger management problem and noted "this is the sort of offending that normally results in a sentence of imprisonment."
Mr Faram imposed a 29-day sentence, which allowed the 37-year-old to be released on Thursday due to the time he had already served.
The magistrate said half of the 150 hours of community service imposed would be removed if Chilvers attended all of his appointments.
Mr Faram ordered Chilvers attend drug and alcohol treatment.
He said "all bets would be off" if he re-offended during the next 18 months.
