The incident at the Wangaratta unit would end with a 20-year-old woman getting punched to the face and 19-year-old Dylan Myers arrested for aggravated burglary.
He appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court this week to face the allegations.
Myers and another unidentified man are accused of forcing their way into the victim's Vincent Road unit by kicking the locked back door at 6am on September 30.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Heath Dosser said the second man fled when the woman got up, but Myers allegedly demanded money and her mobile phone, then refused to leave the bedroom and watched as she got dressed.
"The victim has pushed past the accused into the kitchen and then she's pulled a knife from the block, demanding that the accused leave the unit," he said.
Myers allegedly also got a knife and said "if you're going to pull a knife, I'm going to stab you".
MORE NEWS FROM COURT:
The woman dropped the knife and ran outside, and Myers followed.
When she grabbed him to stop him getting away, he allegedly punched her to the face then fled when neighbours came out to help.
Myers was charged with aggravated burglary, recklessly causing injury and assault with a weapon.
He had told police he was in Wodonga at the time, but Sergeant Dosser told the court that Myers' mobile phone registered in Wangaratta and the teenager was seen on CCTV running through a nearby petrol station. Myers handed himself into police on October 5 and has remained in custody.
His defence solicitor Jackson McLeod said a psychological report found Myers' criminal history stemmed fromhis ADHD and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, which was not addressed in his childhood. "Plainly it's serious offending," he said.
"It's conceded that a term of imprisonment will be warranted in the circumstances."
But he asked the jail sentence be combined with a community corrections order and the case was adjourned for Myers to be assessed.
