The long-awaited opening of Harris Farm Markets in Albury is drawing closer.
The Sydney-based grocery chain is finishing the fit out in the Young Street store and is aiming for an opening by the end of the month.
While a spokesperson said the date is yet to be confirmed, the finishing touches are going into the former Bunnings Warehouse site with a grand opening to be set in the coming weeks.
Among the hoards of trades working inside the building is Benalla-based artist Tim Bowtell who has been working on a large mural dedicated to local produces and fresh produce.
Mr Bowtell, who has painted multiple silos across Victoria, was approached by the company to create the artwork along one of the inside walls.
"It is based on highlighting the fresh produce and farmers as well as local farming," Mr Bowtell said.
"The mural itself is about five to six metres high and once it is finished will be about 20 to 30 metres long.
"I haven't actually measured it to be honest but its pretty big
"One of the things Harris Farm seems to do is to look for local people to help with these projects and because they were opening a store in Albury they put the feelers out to get a local mural artist and my name came up through different connections.
"I jumped at the opportunity.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"This time last year I was painting an indoor mural down near Dandenong and it has been great given the time of year, much rather inside than in the heat at a silo.
"The last few weeks have been pretty hot so I'm in air conditioning comfort which has been a real bonus."
Mr Bowtell said, despite having to work around all the trades that are finishing off the inside of the store, he will be finished by the end of the week.
"All up it will take me just over two weeks to finish the mural," he said.
"I've been starting later in the morning because all the trades normally start around 7am.
"Then I can work into the evening until about 8pm to get a few hours by myself in there. But everyone has been great."
The grocer is also set to host other businesses inside the market including local names Blacksmith Provedore who will have a licensed pizzeria and playground on site.
Murray River Smokehouse, Milawa Bread, Gundowering Ice Cream will also be featured in the markets as well as Sydney Fresh Seafood who will have a fish monger and fish and chip takeaway shop on site and Rebel Donuts. Harris Farm Markets said they were hiring 150 employees for the Albury store and hope to have a confirmed opening date soon.
