Firefighters were called to the Kosciuszko Road home at around 2.45pm.
The fire had spread to the house but the woman was out in time after a friend driving past alerted her to the car fire.
The woman's grandson Jason Sandland, who also lives at the home, said his nan was "terrified".
"I was out at the weir when I got a phone call from a friend that my grandmother's car was on fire in the shed and by the time we got here the house was well alight," he told The Border Mail.
"Two cars in there are burnt out, three bedrooms are destroyed, virtually three quarters of the house is gone.
"Nan had just driven in and parked the car and went inside when a friend drove past and saw the car on fire and got her out."

Mr Sandland said he was just thankful his grandmother was safe.
"It is just all the memories that we have lost, that is all it is," he said.
"We have been here for 36 years - it was the fourth house in the street.
"But everything else can be replaced."
Fire crews are still on scene but the fire was brought under control just before 4pm.
Four fire trucks and 16 firefighters helped bring the fire under control.
It is not known what started the fire.
