The concrete sundial was established in 1950, acknowledging 100 years' contribution to Albury following the 1850 decision by Thomas Hodges Mate to open a general store.
The offender gained entry to the gardens overnight on Wednesday and broke the sundial off its plinth.
The structure was broken and left discarded, so it will be restored by Albury Council.
There was also graffiti tagging on the garden fence.
The incident, which occurred sometime between Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, has been reported to Albury Police and anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
