That has been Paule Gauquie's mindset for the past four years as she battles lung cancer.
While an immunotherapy treatment has helped the 70-year-old's physical health, Ms Gauquie said it has been her mental health which has kept her going.
Mrs Gauquie has welcomed the Albury Wodonga Regional Cancer Centre wellness centre reopening after it was closed due to COVID and said the new coordinator running the facility is the best man for the job.
"The news was not good, they gave me six months maximum, and that was four years ago," she said.
"It has done the trick.
"The wellness centre has been just amazing and getting Ben's help through a mindfulness courses has really helped my mindset through that treatment.
"While I wouldn't say it is more important than the medical treatment, having the right support through the wellness centre has really helped me and is why I am here four years later."
Ben Engel, who has taught mindfulness to cancer patients and their carers at the centre since 2018, has stepped into the role of wellness centre coordinator late last year and is keen to put into practice what they have learnt during the COVID shutdown.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Engel, who has previously worked in information technology and human resources, and is also a registered counsellor, said he hoped to introduce new programs and services to the wellness centre.
"I'm interested in evidence-based programs and have seen how that kind of psycho-social support for anyone, not just people with cancer, can complement whatever medical treatment they're receiving," he said.
"With my background in IT, I'm looking to deliver these online as well as in person to make the services as accessible as possible."
Mr Engel will also continue to offer mindfulness-based stress reduction programs for patients and carers, as well as pop-up mindfulness clinics.
"We have learnt a lot during COVID - it has helped us put some systems in place to deal with it again and we will also continue some of our online services for those patients and carers who might not be able to attend the centre," Mr Engel said. "There will continue to be programs that are delivered both in person and online to help those rural and remote patients."
Mrs Gauquie said she often gets asked how she looks so good while going through treatment. Her answer is simple. "I say it's because of my oncologist, Craig Underhill, and the mental attitude I have, having listened to Ben so carefully," she said.
