The Under-16s competition has also been raised to under-17s following the cancellation of the 2020 fixture due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

An open women's category will also be contested, with Wodonga Bulldogs joining the league's seven other clubs for the first time.

The season will commence April 11.

With North East clubs now beginning to prepare, league operations manager Matthew Elliott encouraged any interested players to contact their local club.

"Our clubs are full of passionate and energetic people who are committed to providing opportunities to women and girls of all ages and abilities to play football in a safe and welcoming environment," he said.

After overcoming the challenges of 2020, Elliott said it's great to see players returning.

"All of the clubs greatly missed playing football last year, so to see them start preseason training and welcome back their players is fantastic," he said.

"Preparations for the season are well under way and we are looking forward to delivering a full season in 2021.

"Whether you're an experienced player or new to football, each club is inclusive."
