Gathie, who played 10 senior matches for Essendon, recently relocated to the region through employment and has had several training runs with the Lions.
The 24-year-old previously played for the Bendigo Pioneers.
"It's pretty exciting for the club," Wahgunyah coach Kodee Lowe said.
"He's mates with Joel Barclay from Wahgunyah and decided to have a run with us which is fantastic.
"Two years ago he was playing for Essendon in the VFL but he did his knee and was cut."
Standing at 196-centimetres, Lowe is setting Gathie to play at centre half-forward for his new-look Wahgunyah side.
Meanwhile, fellow recruit Adam Romey will make his Northern Territory premier league debut for Southern Districts this weekend.
