Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer said the fire at the Pearce Street public housing property was not considered suspicious, although an arson chemist visited the site the following day.
"Their job is to establish area of origin and cause and our job is in relation to the circumstances of that, which may or may not make it suspicious," the detective said on Tuesday.
"At this stage, nothing to suggest any foul play but we've got our chemists here today to give us some comfort around what the cause actually is."
The fire began at the back of the house, which was significantly damaged by smoke and flames in the blaze.
Detective Sergeant Simpfendorfer said neighbours saw smoke coming from the house about 7.30pm Monday and assisted the occupant, a woman in her early 30s.
"It could have been a lot more tragic had people not jumped in and helped, so well done to those that did," he said.
EARLIER: Police are investigating a fire at a Wodonga home on Monday evening.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said four firefighters responded to the Pearce Street incident just after 7.30pm, after a caller to triple zero reported smoke coming from a house.
"Firefighters arrived on scene in five minutes to find the house well alight," she said.
"Wearing breathing apparatus, they attacked the fire and brought it under control within 20 minutes of arriving on scene.
"Firefighters transferred one person into the care of Ambulance Victoria paramedics."
Detective Sergeant Graeme Simpfendorfer, of Wodonga police, said firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the unit and stop it spreading to neighbouring homes.
Detective Sergeant Simpfendorfer said an occupant home at the time of the fire was treated for smoke inhalation, "but she's fine".
"We expect our arson chemists up at some point today to look at the area of origin and cause," he said.
