The Huon Creek man appeared in custody in Albury Local Court on Monday before magistrate Richard Funston charged with the alleged historical sexual assault of a child on multiple occasions in 2010 and 2011 in the region.
Police said the girl was just seven years old at the time of the alleged sexual assaults.
The man, who is not named to protect the identity of the victim, is charged with one count of sexual intercourse witha person under the age of 10 years old, and two counts of indecent assault of a person under the age of 16 years old.
In September 2020, officers from Murray River Police District established Strike Force Lepemi to investigate reports a teenage girl had been sexually assaulted as a child.

Police believe the man was known to the victim.
"Following extensive inquiries, a 34-year-old man was arrested at a home in Huon, Victoria, on Monday, February 22, 2020" a NSW Police statement said.
He was later extradited to NSW where he was charged and bail refused until he was granted conditional bail yesterday.
"Police will allege in court that the man sexually assaulted the girl - then aged seven - on multiple occasions between 2010 and 2011 in the Lavington area," the statement said.
The man was granted bail at a brief hearing on Monday with strict conditions attached.
He must report to the Albury police station six days a week, be of good behaviour and remain at home between 8pm and 6am.
