PETstock Albury and Wodonga owner Shane Evans, along with the Wodonga Dog Rescue and Dunroamin Animal Rescue, are encouraging locals to adopt an animal as part of PETstock Assist's inaugural National Pet Adoption Month.

The program is encouraging people to "adopt different this March" by adopting a new way of thinking when it comes to rescues. Wodonga Dog Rescue's Peta McRae said unfortunately some people return the rescue dogs just weeks after adopting them.

"Dogs need some time to adjust to their new surroundings and this can sometimes be challenging at first," she said.

"They are a life-long commitment and we are really passionate about finding the right homes for all our dogs.

"All our dogs come desexed, vaccinated and ready to go to their new home. We have had plenty of people interested in dogs, but I encourage everyone to think about adopting this month."

Mr Evans said his two Border stores have a great relationship with both rescue organisations and direct any customers to them if they enquire about adopting a pet. There are also kittens available in store.

PETstock Assist charity and events lead Jessica Curtis wants everyone not just adoptive parents to think differently about what they can do to help break the cycle of pet homelessness.

"Those who choose to adopt not shop play a critical role in reducing the number of animals in need," she says.

"Not only by providing a loving home and second chance, but also leading by example.

"Our rescue parents take the time to learn a pet's unique personality to find their perfect match, they make a long-term commitment, and ultimately, build a relationship that improves a pet's life and their own.
