After attacking the victim, Michael David Weeks went on an alcohol-fueled rampage inside their public housing unit, picking up and smashing several items.

But in the end it was he who had to be taken to hospital, not his partner of 12 years, after Weeks stepped on a broken plate and badly cut his foot.

Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston told Weeks it was clear there was a strong need for him to continue with the anger management counselling on which he had embarked since the attack.

"I take some comfort that you've started that process," he said.

Nevertheless, Mr Funston said it was a serious assault.

"I mean, he's punched four or five times to the head," he said to Weeks' lawyer, Sascha McCorriston.

Weeks, 28, of Thurgoona Street, pleaded guilty to a single domestic violence-related charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The pair were at home on February 26 about 10pm watching television and drinking beer - each had downed about six full-strength stubbies - when the argument erupted

"The accused became very agitated and as both parties were standing and facing each other the accused has punched the victim about four or five times to the head," police said.

This left the victim with a laceration and swelling to just above his left eye.

After Weeks trashed the flat and cut his foot, the victim left to get help from a neighbour who in turn called the police.

Weeks was taken to Albury hospital by ambulance.

Police went to the hospital about 11.40pm and arrested Weeks, taking him to Albury police station where he was charged.

He declined to be interviewed.

Weeks was sentenced to a 12-month community corrections order, with supervision.
