The Doctor's Son resumed with a mid-field placing in the recent Country Championship Qualifier at Wagga.
The son of Dr Doutes boasts an impressive second-up record of three wins from four attempts.
Whitelaw said the step-up to a mile was also in his stable stars' favour.
"It looks more than a winnable race and he will take a lot of beating over the mile," Whitelaw said.
"I thought his run in the Qualifier at Wagga was full of merit.
"He was at the tail of the field turning for home and was forced to make his run out wide on the track.
"Even at the 400m mark he was still nearly last and only just got beaten by a bit over two lengths.
"Being a dry track the field didn't spread as much as I would have hoped for so there weren't a lot of gaps.
"If he got the gaps at the right time, I've got no doubt he finishes closer.
"So it was a good run but that doesn't pay the bills."
The Doctor's Son has drawn to get an economical run after coming up with barrier one and is set to be partnered by claiming apprentice Ellen Hennessy.
"Because he gets back in his races, he is always going to need his fair share of luck," Whitelaw said.
"He is also not a big fan of dry tracks and appreciates a bit of give in the ground.
"But he has had one start at Corowa for a win and if he gets his fair share of luck, I expect him to be in the finish."
