Border-based head contractor Premier Building & Construction has intensified works on the prominent corner property in central Albury in recent weeks with major internal works a particular focus.
The project's signature element, the return of the distinctive stainless steel globe, will be fitted into place in coming weeks and is currently under construction by Grove Steel Solution.
"Pre-Christmas we did some early work and in January and February we've been carrying out an extensive internal demolition which has included a lot of structural work," PBC owner Anthony Baker said.
"We've re-shaped and introduced a landscape treatment on the Dean Street frontage and all the tenancies in Dean and Kiewa streets will get new shopfronts."
An internal walkway has been removed as part of the building reconfiguration.
Reconstruction works have revealed some blasts from the past of former tenants of the building including the former member for Albury, the late Ian Glachan.
His office was located in Kiewa Street.
"The owners have got a real interest in how the building presents," Mr Baker said.
"It is an iconic building and they want to do the right thing by Albury.
"They are really invested in making the external presentation really iconic.
"We're very excited about having the opportunity to do it.
"The Mates building was the most recent one we worked on in the CBD a few years ago and it is good to be able to put your mark on the place."
