The demand for renovated homes in the centre of town was on full display on Saturday morning when 438 Macauley Street was sold under the hammer for $986,000 in front of a crowd of more than 100.

The red brick four-bedroom home, which is nearly 100 years old is just 350 metres from Dean Street and attracted around 10 registered bidders with a young family the winning buyer.

The home was one of at least five other properties that were up for auction on the same day, including a two-bedroom unit across the road.

Stean Nicholls auctioneer Lachlan Hutchins said Macauley Street is always a popular area in Albury.

"The house was originally built in 1920, then Ash Wills, who is a very good local builder has done the extension and renovation," he said.

"Everyone who has come through, which has been more than 100 groups, have commented on how well it has been renovated and kept with the period of the home.

"Those high ceilings have been carried right through the home as well.

"These sorts of properties in Albury don't come up very often and that is why we have the crowd that is here today."

Mr Hutchins said the property market in Albury remains strong, with properties in the CBD only getting "harder and harder" to come by.

"The market is very strong, largely due to the fact that Albury is becoming more and more popular," he said.

"People are moving here, we are getting 80 applications on our rentals which is crazy.

"The interest here in central Albury won't stop. Properties around here are only getting harder and harder to get and something like this won't come up again very soon."

The bidding started at $800,000 on the home, which boasts Murray Pine floors, three metre-high ceilings and rear access to a double garage from the laneway.

The open plan living and dining room is completed by an updated kitchen.

The living opens to a private alfresco area all under cover while there is also direct access to the private courtyard through one of three sets of French doors.

Interested buyers and on-lookers spilled out onto Macauley Street for the auction.
