Rural Fire Service district assistant Shai Feuerherdt said the blaze was not yet extinguished and firefighters were monitoring it.
"It is under control, it's contained within in the shed," he said.
"We're going to have crews there overnight and over the next couple of days."
The cause of the fire, which took a couple of hours to bring under control, was being investigated.
The shed, along with the hay and equipment inside, has been destroyed.
"It's looking anywhere up to, could be $8 to $10 million damage," Mr Feuerherdt said.
The brigades that attended included Tocumwal Rural Fire Brigade, Yarroweyah Fire Station, Finley Rural Fire Brigade, Barooga RFS and Fire and Rescue NSW Tocumwal.
EARLIER: A shed and equipment have burned in an early morning fire south east of Tocumwal on Monday.
Rural Fire Service district assistant Shai Feuerherdt said the first calls to the blaze at a property on Barooga-Tocumwal Road came about 5.45am.
"It's quite large, we have at least 25 personnel on the ground, there is about eight appliances, plus we have CFA assisting and Fire and Rescue assisting," he said.
"Currently it's under fire investigation and they've got it contained."
IN OTHER NEWS:
Mr Feuerherdt said the shed measured about 50 metres by 50 metres and was a hay processing facility where pasture hay was packed into shipping containers for export.
Essential Energy workers disconnected power to the shed.
The fire did not spread beyond the shed, which was significantly damaged.
"The smoke was very visible, this morning it had a tendency to be blowing towards the town of Tocumwal," Mr Feuerherdt said.
"They've just had a slight wind change and a slight shower of rain down there on the fire ground at the moment."
He advised people to avoid any smoke, which could be toxic owing to the electrical appliances and any plastics in the shed.
