A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Missing Person Squad detectives had received an item that was handed into police over the weekend.
"The item is being reviewed to determine if it has any relevance to the investigation," she said on Monday.
"The investigation remains ongoing and as such it would be inappropriate to comment any further at this time."
The item has been reported elsewhere to be a drone.
Investigators had been told Mr Hill, of Drouin, took his DJI Mavic drone before going camping with Pakenham's Carol Clay nearly a year ago.
The last contact with the pair was from Mr Hill on March 20 via HF radio stating he was at Wonnangatta Valley in the Victorian Alps when he made the call.
Police put out an appeal for public help with the investigation on Friday, ahead of the Victorian Labour Day long weekend.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper said police could not leave any "what ifs" in the investigation.
"The grief that these families have had to deal with over the past year, coupled with immense public speculation, is immensely difficult to comprehend," he said on Friday.
"We will not give up on the possibility that we can give those families the answers they need - but we cannot do this without the public's help."
Campers found Mr Hill's vehicle with signs of minor fire damage at their campsite, which was completely destroyed by fire, near Dry River Creek Track in the Wonnangatta Valley on March 21.
Information was later received about sighting of an older person or pair in the Black Snake Creek, Eaglevale River crossing and the Ollies Jump area on March 22-23, however police have not been able to establish if this was the missing campers.
"It is still yet to be fully determined whether the pair's disappearance is suspicious," police said.
