Having lost his mum when he was only 12, he discovered iconic lead singer Freddie Mercury via radio station 3SR.
"I remember hearing the emotion in Freddie's voice," he said.
"Nobody in my family was a singer; everybody in Tallygaroopna played football!
"Back then 3SR played some pretty conservative country artists like Slim Dusty; so the first time they played Tie Your Mother Down by Queen, it just blew my mind!
"Queen's collaboration of opera and rock and in a voice to die for was incredible."
Inspired by Mercury, Thompson went on to revel as the magnetic front man for 1990s band Chocolate Starfish.
They've put on a hugely successful run of Classic Album Series concerts, with an ode to Meat Loaf's Bat Out Of Hell (2017) and INXS's KICK (2018).
Now Thompson will pay tribute to the immeasurable talent of Queen, Freddie Mercury and the acclaimed soundtrack of the smash-hit Golden Globe winning music biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.
Bohemian Rhapsody Live in Concert was originally just a one-off event, slated for April 2019 in Melbourne.
Thompson announced the show just as the biopic landed in theatres in 2018 and the concert sold-out within minutes.
Due to popular demand, Thompson decided to take the live show out on the road.
IN OTHER NEWS:
After postponing shows last year due to the COVID-19 crisis, Thompson is gearing up to take Bohemian Rhapsody back on the road.
He owns the stage, channels the music and has audiences eating out the palm of his hand.
Showcasing the music of his hero Freddie Mercury and Queen in Bohemian Rhapsody the blockbuster movie soundtrack, live in concert, has already seen Thompson perform to sold-out houses and standing ovations.
Chocolate Starfish had six top 40 singles and two top 10 albums on the Australian charts, gold and platinum record sales and an ARIA for Most Popular Album.
The Bohemian Rhapsody concert will feature hits from Queen's back catalogue the likes of Somebody to Love, Killer Queen, Fat Bottomed Girls, We Will Rock You, Another One Bites The Dust, I Want To Break Free and Under Pressure.
Tickets for the 2021 tour of Bohemian Rhapsody Soundtrack Live are on sale now.
