Whitelaw was bursting with pride afterThe Doctor's Son produced the run of his career to storm home for third behind Entente in the Albury Gold Cup.
The veteran trainer entered The Doctor's Son in the Albury Mile the previous day but opted to scratch the horse so he could have a runner in his hometown cup.
It proved to be a wise decision after The Doctor's Son defied his longshot status to finish third and leave several Group and Listed performers in his wake.
Ridden by Ellen Hennessy, The Doctor's Son ($150) produced a barnstorming run from last on the home turn.
The six-year-old gelding paid $36 for the place on the VIC TAB.
Whitelaw was full of admiration for his stable star.
"I couldn't be more proud of the horse and I'm pretty excited," Whitelaw said.
"It wasn't a bad run for a 150/1 shot was it?
"Geez he's an under-rated horse.
"On his day he can rocket home.
"He must have run some blistering time over the last three furlongs because he was last on the turn.
"I almost feel like I won the cup, I'm that thrilled.
"All the owners came from everywhere to watch the horse and we are going to have a big celebration tonight."
Whitelaw revealed most of the owners and himself had a slice of the juicy odds on offer.
"We all didn't think he was a 150/1 shot," he said.
