Cr Thurley qualified for the vaccine due to being aged over 70 and presented at the Rehoboth Medical Centre in Urana Road Lavington for the AstraZeneca shot.

He hopes his decision to embrace the opportunity to be vaccinated can head off conspiracy theories about the jab's effectiveness being constantly spread on social media.

"I'm old enough to remember when polio was around and whooping cough and they have all gone because of vaccination," Cr Thurley said.

"We rely on vaccination.

"It has changed our lives to the point where there is no polio, no whooping cough."

Cr Thurley said the health centre was packed with those wanting to be vaccinated and estimated up to 20 people also had the jab when he had his late morning booking.

Meanwhile, vaccinations are going to be available at more locations across the Murrumbidgee Local Health District from Monday after being initially confined to hubs at Wagga and Griffith.
