Sergeant Steve Schausinger, of Albury Highway Patrol, said a utility towing a box trailer left the Walla-Gerogery Road and collided with a tree about 5pm on Tuesday.
"The driver was the only occupant, who was trapped in the vehicle for two hours ... a combination of factors, the extensive damage and his injuries, so it was a very delicate operation," he said.
Sergeant Schausinger said it was raining when the crash occurred on a straight stretch of road approaching a slight left hand bend.

Paramedics treated the man while he was trapped, with firefighters and State Emergency Service volunteers also attending the scene.
"He was extracted from the vehicle and when stabilised was conveyed by ambulance to Albury Airport where he was transferred to a helicopter and taken to the Canberra hospital," the sergeant said.
"He's been admitted with significant injuries."
Canberra Health Services said it did not provide any patient details or condition reports due to privacy regulations.
