Detective Sergeant Marcus Boyd, of Cobram Crime Investigation Unit, said the man had been charged with a number of offences including home invasion, aggravated burglary, intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury and related offences.
He appeared in Wangaratta Magistrates Court and was granted bail to appear on July 1 for a committal mention hearing.
Detective Sergeant Boyd said police opposed bail.
Searches of the crime scenes have now been completed and the ute towed away.
EARLIER: Two men remain in hospital and another in custody after an argument turned violent at a Yarrawonga camping ground on Thursday night.
A 63-year-old man who lived in a caravan at Forges Bend Track received upper body and head wounds as well as a serious laceration to his leg about 8pm.
Responding to the incident, police then came across two men, aged 23 and 53, in a dual cab ute, seemingly bogged.
The younger man had what police believed was a stab wound to his upper chest.
Both injured men were airlifted to Melbourne hospitals in serious conditions while the 53-year-old was taken to Wangaratta Police Station to be interviewed by Wangaratta and Cobram detectives.
By lunchtime Friday, four crime scenes had been established at the site, including the caravan and the ute, and forensics officers were examining them.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"We've formed an initial picture of what may have occurred but it's far too early to establish conclusively what happened," he said yesterday.
"When we've interviewed all the witnesses and the persons involved, we'll be in a stronger position to lay possible charges."
The two men in the ute were believed to be camping, but not with the third man.
The two injured men are not yet fit enough to be interviewed.
Police questioned other campers in the area, which lies next to the Murray River, west of Yarrawonga.
One man told The Border Mail he hadn't heard anything unusual.
"It wasn't until the police and ambulance come along," he said.
But a group of four campers mentioned hearing screaming.
"We didn't go even out, we sit here and just listened, because we don't know what's going on," one man said.
"It was already dark, you can't see much," a woman from the same group added.
"I never sleep all night, because I'm scared."
Detective Sergeant Boyd said the search for possible weapons would continue, including using dive teams in the Murray River if necessary.
"At this stage we've got an open mind in regard to what weapons or weapon has been used," he said.
"We'll make every effort to search each crime scene, if we've got to go in the water, we'll go in the water."
The Cobram CIU officer in charge said the police officers who initially attended the incident did "a fantastic job".
"They were responding to people who suffered very serious injuries, a very dynamic scene," Detective Sergeant Boyd said.
"The way they responded to it and calmed the scene and also took care of the victims/offenders is to be commended.
"It certainly was a very dynamic scene at 8 o'clock on Thursday night."
