The talented Wodonga competitor was victorious in the little athletics 100m handicap event.

A change to this year's format meant there were no semi-finals and only the winner of each heat plus the next fastest time would qualify for the final.

Mulholland knew he had to win his heat to stay in contention and was confident if he started well he'd have enough to hold off his rivals.

"Having had no formal training or coaching prior to the event, and never competed in a handicapped event, it was an experience that will now always hold a special place in the heart for Sloan," Wodonga Little Athletics Centre president Lauren Strauss said.

"He lined up next to athletes from not only around Victoria, but South Australia as well, most of whom had personal coaches and training for this event.

"The competition included talented athletes known within the little athletics community for their impressive results at this season's track and field carnivals."

Mulholland also made the final in the 400m and narrowly missed out on a place in the 800m decider.

His focus shifts towards the cross country season for Wodonga Little Athletics Centre, due to start in May, and he is eager to take part in more gift events next season.

Mulholland has already said he can't wait to return to Stawell in 2022.
