Wodonga Highway Patrol officers were patrolling the Beechworth-Wodonga Road in Wooragee about 4.20pm on Saturday afternoon when they saw a small white hatch-back overtaking several other cars on the road.
The speed of the white car was checked at 164km/h in a 100km/h zone.
A 26-year-old Wodonga man was pulled over a short time later and underwent a road-side drug test which returned a positive result.
The man is expected to be charged on summons with driving while suspended, speed and drug driving offences and has had his car impounded for 30 days.
The impound formed part of Operation Nexus, a state-wide operation aimed at reducing road trauma.
The operation involved all available personnel including local road policing units, general duties, other operational policing units and centralised resources from Road Policing Command.
