They met on ABC show Class Act in the early 1990s.
Lane had not yet teamed up with Frank Woodley (the other half of Australian comedy duo Lano and Woodley) and Hobson was making waves with The Australian Opera.
"After that we became part of a group that kicked the footy every Wednesday and Sunday," Hobson said.
"We were a group of like-minded guys mainly working in the arts; literally could've, would've been champions!
"We're just sports junkies."
From otherwise different backgrounds, Hobson and Lane observed each other's worlds, often thinking: "Gee, wouldn't it be nice to have a go at what that other guy does?"
The resultant show was In Tails, which was launched in 2016-17 with performances in Adelaide, Hobart, Bendigo and Albury.
Now that show will launch a new tour at Albury Entertainment Centre on Saturday, May 1.
Hobson described the new-improved, two-act show, as "turbo-charged".
"Literally the audience gets an ostentatious comedian who wants to be an opera singer and an ostentatious opera singer who wants to be a comedian," Hobson said.
"Colin is hilarious but he also has this incredibly rich voice.
"He has this fantastic instrument in his voice that he uses to get laughs but he could have also been a singer."
IN OTHER NEWS:
A tenor and composer, Hobson is one of Australia's best-known operatic, concert and stage performers, with a repertoire that spans the gamut of musical styles from Baroque through to pop.
Beginning his career in rock and jazz bands, Hobson's potential as a classical singer was discovered by the Victoria State Opera in the 1980s.
He made his name with Opera Australia in his award-winning performance of Rodolfo in La Boheme directed by Baz Luhrmann (filmed in the early 1990s to worldwide acclaim).
From 2017 to 2019, Hobson toured the hugely successful production The 2 Of Us alongside compatriot and friend Marina Prior, which came to Albury.
In almost 20 years together Lano and Woodley won the coveted Perrier Award for best show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, starred in their own television series and toured sold-out shows across the country.
