Kenneth Ray Williams was recently sentenced by Judge Sean Grant in the Albury District Court after forcing his way into the woman's motel room.
He had been in a relationship with the victim for six years, but they separated and she moved into the emergency accommodation property a day before being attacked.
After smashing his way into her David Street room on February 25 last year, Williams punched the woman multiple times and grabbed her by her hair.
He dragged her towards a bathroom while continuing to punch her in the head, face and arms.
The 48-year-old hit her with a torch, causing cuts, as she screamed for him to stop.
Williams fled and police arrived a short time later.
They found the victim covered in blood.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Williams was arrested at a Byron Street home in Glenroy three days after the incident and was too drug affected to be interviewed.
Judge Grant ordered he serve at least two years and four months in jail before becoming eligible for parole.
"Domestic violence is a blight on civil society," he said.
"No man should strike a woman nor should he do so with a weapon.
"To do so is cowardly, abhorrent and contrary to the rules of civilised society.
"If you strike a woman you forfeit your opportunity to live in a civilised society.
"You forfeit the privilege.
"You must be removed; jail is the only option for you."
The court heard the attack was unprovoked.
The victim needed surgery after the incident.
Williams grew up in Wilcannia and was exposed to drinking, drug use and violence.
He has battled drug use his entire life, including heroin and ice, and relapsed into methamphetamine and alcohol use about a month before the incident.
Judge Grant imposed a maximum sentence of three-and-a-half years, with Williams eligible for parole in June next year.
