And all 27 stations will receive replacement flags this month - although the Alpine stations are limited in their flag-flying.

Twelve months of planning went into the first flag-raising ceremony in August, 2019, and Indi MP Helen Haines has now provided new flags for each station.

Inspector Paul Hargreaves said it was important the flags were displayed across VicPol's eastern region division four.

"You can see that whilst we've been flying the three flags proudly, they are due for a refresh," he said.

"So to be able to put new ones up, display them and have them lit up at night really demonstrates to our First Nations people that we have a high level of respect and a high level of acknowledgment they are the traditional custodians of the land.

"We are serious about our relationship with Indigenous people.

"Dealing with some of the Aboriginal Elders in the community, they are very thankful and acknowledge what we're trying to do."

An Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer has started at Wodonga police station and Inspector Hargreaves said the role was an important addition for their team.

"She has developed some great relationships and yesterday we had some Aboriginal Elders here, looking at how we can culturally respect Aboriginal people when they walk into a police station," he said.

A newly-elected Dr Haines witnessed the historic flag raising at Wodonga police station in 2019.

"I'm really proud as the member of Parliament to be able to support Victoria Police here and across the 27 stations," she said.

"It is a great privilege for me."

Superintendent Joy Arbuthnot facilitated the 2019 flag-raising led by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community members.

"Historically, the police and police uniform is not a symbol of trust to the community," she told The Border Mail at the time.

"So it's a good way for us to say, 'We want to work with you'. We want to continue the steps towards reconciliation."
