The club will stage the inaugural running of the $25,000 Albury Sprint Classic, (1000m) on Friday.

There will also be a luncheon in the members to coincide with the new feature sprint.

Club chief Steve Hetherton said he was hoping the race could grow in stature in the future.

"We have initially added a bit of extra prizemoney compared to your standard race of $22,000," Hetherton said.

"We are hoping it is a race that can attract a field of quality open class sprinters.

"It is placed precariously a week after the Wagga Town Plate and could appeal to lower grade sprinters who want to back-up or may have missed a start in the feature.

"The aim is to build the prizemoney in the future.

"The nominations are quite pleasing so it will be interesting to see the quality of the final field with a bit of rain about."

The final field will be released today.

Meanwhile Murrumbidgee Turf Club (MTC) has attracted its biggest crowd in more than a decade for its two-day carnival last week.

It is estimated more than 12,000 people attended the two days.

A crowd of 3000 attended Town Plate day before more than 9000 people flocked to the course for the Wagga Gold Cup.
