Edgar Braybrooks, 103, died early Friday morning at Riverwood retirement village, West Albury, with his wife of 61 years, Angela, by his side.
Mr and Mrs Braybrooks and their two children, John and Sussan, now the member for Farrer, immigrated to Australia in 1974.
Born in Norwich, Norfolk, on January 17, 1918, Mr Braybrooks became a police officer in Palestine at the age of 19.
He later joined the British Army Intelligence Corps, then worked in intelligence during the Cold War.
His various postings saw him living in Palestine, India, Singapore, Indonesia, Austria, Malaya, Nigeria, Qatar and United Arab Emirates.
In 1973, he was awarded an MBE by the Queen for services to British interests in the Persian Gulf.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Speaking to The Border Mail ahead of his 100th birthday in 2018, Mr Braybrooks said he had always wanted to travel and see the world.
But he rarely talked about his work to his wife, whom he married in 1960.
"If it was dangerous, I was never told," Mrs Braybrooks said.
Their daughter Sussan Ley said her father lived a remarkable life.
"We were blessed to have him to the age of 103," she said on Friday.
"He filled every one of those years with energy, inquiry and a sense of adventure. We are thankful he was able to spend his final days so well cared for at Riverwood and alongside those he loved."
Mr Braybrooks is survived by his wife, children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The funeral arrangements are still being confirmed.
