Emergency services were called to the Yarrawonga property about 11.30am on Monday.
The home, located on Carmichaels Road between Boomahnoomoonah and Keenans roads, was quickly engulfed in flames.
Water had to be sourced from a nearby dam to battle the fire, with flames coming out of the roof of the weatherboard building when crews arrived.
Firefighters remained at the scene for several hours as smoke continued to pour from the home.
The flames were fanned by high winds in the area.
Fire Rescue Victoria Commander Mark Narayan said fire investigators would return this morning to determine the cause, but there was nothing to indicate the incident was suspicious.
"Unfortunately there's been major structural damage which has taken place in this house," he said.
"Luckily, there was nobody hurt or injured in this fire.
"This is a timely reminder for residents to ensure their smoke alarms have a battery in them and are operating correctly, and to take care when using heating appliances throughout their house."
IN OTHER NEWS
Brigades from multiple areas, including Yarrawonga, Tungamah, Bundalong and Mulwala, attended the incident.
Commander Narayan said the weatherboard home was more than 100 years old.
Much of the house collapsed, with a chimney, some walls and parts of the roof all that was left standing.
There were concerns about possible asbestos being located in the building given the age of the house.
CFA incident controller Simon Crawford said the Yarrawonga brigade was first on scene and called in other trucks.
"They did a great job setting up hose lines," he said.
"It was a great effort in the conditions, with the availability of water, by all involved."
Thick smoke could be seen coming from the home from several kilometres away.
Fire crews will continue to monitor the blaze overnight to ensure any hot spots are extinguished.
