Fire crews were called to Saru Road in Leneva on Monday afternoon after a weekend burn got out of control in steep and rocky terrain.
The blaze, which firefighters were alerted to at 1.30pm, burnt out an acre of grass.
CFA Commander Brett Myers said the person responsible was allowed to conduct the burnt, but didn't continue to monitor the blaze.
He said such fires were unusual at this time of year.
"It's important people avoid being complacent," he said.
"We had firefighters on scene for most of the afternoon to make sure it was extinguished.
"It was difficult to access.
