The boy's mother was also in the car.
Police say the 37-year-old driver involved in Tuesday's incident placed his own son at serious risk with little regard the boy's safety.
The man's Toyota Corolla was detected by highway patrol members at Little Billabong about 9am on Tuesday.
The car was seen travelling at 129km/h, causing police to intercept the vehicle.
The Toyota stopped and officers approached, but the man sped off before hitting 185km/h near the Little Billabong rest area.
The driver continued south and overtook a truck at 168km/h, broke heavily, and crossed onto the wrong side of the highway.
He drove south in a northbound lane, which police said posed a "extreme risk" to the man, his partner and child in the car, and others on the road.
The car was on the wrong side of the road for at least 2.7 kilometres and the chase was terminated due to safety concerns.
The offender passed other vehicles, including large trucks, while driving on the wrong side of the road.
The man at one point had to take evasive action to avoid a head-on.
The vehicle turned off the highway, headed north on the Olympic Highway near Table Top and went onto a rural property on Rodgers Road East near Albury Paintball.
The Victoria Police air wing was called in as officers attempted to locate the occupants.
After a six hours search which involved scouring rugged terrain, a 37-year-old man and his son were found at a property on Knox Road at Table Top.
