And volunteers were thanked for their selfless efforts during Wear Orange Wednesday.
While Wodonga SES was running a display in Woodland Grove, Chiltern SES co-ordinated a raffle for their operations.
The unit of 42 years averages about 70 call-outs a year with busy periods in Summer, controller Jessica Zuber said.
"We are centrally located to help everyone," she said.
"We're not road crash rescue here, so storm and flood are our predominant call-outs
"We also do a lot of assisting - with our lighting trailer, we assist police, ambulance and CFA with any lighting requests."
Ms Zuber said some members had been part of SES for as long as 19 years and others were very new.
"Most of us average between six to 12 months," she said.
"We actually had a huge intake at the start of 2020, where we got 23 new members."
The unit has maintained its family feel despite the hurdles of COVID-19 and is looking forward to planning for a new facility, as part of plans for a new $2 million Chiltern Community Hub.
Ms Zuber said their current operations were out of an old shire building.
"At the moment, we can't fit a storm rescue truck in this building just because of limitations," she said.
"So our new facility will be able to accommodate a storm rescue truck, which will be amazing for our volunteers."
With 699 people in the North East who volunteer with the State Emergency Service, Ms Zuber challenged Border residents to be the 700th to join.
Across the border, NSW SES Albury Unit member Curtis Kishere was among those profiled.
At 26, he is among the youngest members and Mr Kishere said his main duties involved maintenance.
"Leadership is a big one for me ... I also want to complete the chainsaw course so I can help with storm damage jobs," he said.
"It's a skill that really interests me and there are only a small number of chainsaw-qualified members in our unit."
