On Tuesday June 12, the council reaffirmed its support for the replacement of Hazelwood with clean and renewable energy.
In reaching this decision, the council has joined the many voices across Australia, including signatories to Environment Victoria’s 'Replace Hazelwood' petition, urging the federal government to negotiate Hazelwood’s replacement with renewable energy.
With the deadline for the federal government’s negotiations only a few weeks away, I hope all councils and many residents will call for Hazelwood’s replacement.
Coal-fired power stations are a significant contributor to carbon emissions.
In contrast, wind power and solar energy offer a carbon-neutral source of energy.
And as the Beyond Zero Emissions Zero Carbon Australia report proves, the renewable energy technology is already commercially and economically feasible.
The time is now to end our dependence on coal and make the switch to a healthier and safer present and future for all.
